23rd Wooden Boat Show Mystic Seaport

Every year Wooden Boat Publications in Brooklin, Maine, hosts the Wooden Boat Show. This year is the 23rd edition of this annual show, one of my favourites. After moving around to various locations over the years, it has settled into Mystic Seaport as a pretty much permanent home.

We have exhibited our Paper Jet at this show for the past 7 years and will be there again this year. In 2007 she won the "Outstanding Innovation Award" for introducing many different concepts to wooden boatbuilding. Every year she attracts much attention, standing out as something very different among the mostly traditional craft on display by amateur and professional builders alike.

Natural Florida

Since my mom and brother live in Florida year round, I get to see plenty of developed Florida. But one of the best parts of this voyage has been the discovery of natural Florida, which there is still quite a lot of. Practically every day Ive sailed through long stretches of coast which seem pristine, and Ive been using the "Skipper Bob" anchorage guide to find out-of-the-way gunk holes in the most natural settings possible.

Quite often the ICW winds its way, like a river, through mangroves or other types of forests. These are some of my favorite parts of the waterway since the river is usually fairly narrow and you are close to the scenery. Theres lots of birds (wish I knew what they were!), lots of dolphins, the occasional crock, and manatees, of course.

Actually, I havent seen a single manatee, although I have seen plenty of signs telling me not to run them over at high speeds. They are supposed to resemble large lumps of grey clay floating in the water. This hardly seems like a major tourist attraction, but Its fun to look for them.

Great long stretches of the ICW are big open bays. You still need to stick to the dredged channels, but the channels are often wide and theres usually enough wind for a good sail.

These channels are often bounded by what are called spoil islands on the charts. They are ranged in straight lines along the channel, so I assume that these are man made islands, built up from the sand and mud dredged during the construction of the ICW. There are full size trees on these islands and beaches that attract swarms of small boats full of swimmers, picknickers, and explorers on the weekends.

I called it Treasure Island, because it had a beach all the way around it, and looked like the perfect place to bury treasure.

Occasionally, even the ravages of civilization can be beautiful. The following picture was taken in the middle of a long stretch of undeveloped coast. Right in the midst of pristine beauty, bull dozers were clearing 5 or 10 acres, pushing trees down in rows, and burning them.

Im not sure what they heck they are planning to build there, but there was a kind of savage beauty in what they were doing. If you like burning deserts.

Most of the towns along the ICW are forgettable, and frequently little more than a collection of fishing camps, but occasionally you pass a charming little town that gladdens the heart.

Makes me miss the beautiful villages on Long Island and along the New England coast. Cant wait to take Helena on a cruise to Block Island or Nantucket.

But Im not always ruggedly sailing north along the coast...

I actually stopped in Daytona to watch a World Cup match the other day. I found a delightfully cool Irish Pub on Beach Street, and wasted an entire afternoon eating a Ruben (disgustingly delicioius!) and one or two Guiness Stouts. Uruguay defeated South Africa 3-0.

By the way, scheduling this voyage during the World Cup was a frightfully bad bit of planning on my part. Im not sure what I was thinking. Luckily, Im able to listen to games on my iPhone, and I will be stopping along the way to catch major games -- particularly Brazil games.

But the most dramatic scenery came in the form of thunder clouds, just this afternoon.  Id been hoping to reach an anchorage near Fort Mantanzas, and visit the fort itself in Cabin Boy, but one of the thunderstorms that roam along the coast every day, roamed in my direction for a change. Usually, I manage to sail around them, but this one had my name on it.

I try to avoid spending the night in marinas, as much as possible, but there was no anchorage within reach, so I ducked into the Palm Coast Marina with about 10 minutes to tie up, rig fenders, and clear the deck before the storm hit.

I broke out a bit of rum and my current book, "Peter Duck", by Arthur Ransome (highly recommended for sailors of all ages.) There was sound and fury outside, but inside my snug little cabin, all was well.

So that is where I am at the moment: Palm Coast, FL. Ill try to remember to post my location more frequently (I promise, mom!)

Im running out of places to stack my tools

Late on Sunday afternoon I had just nailed in the last piece of shoe molding, and after surveying my build, I sort of realized I had nothing else to nail up. I had nothing else to rip, and nothing else to cross cut. The next thing I did was throw every piece of lumber off the boat to be hauled away in my truck ( well almost every piece... I stashed a few bits in the engine room). Once the lumber was off the boat, I hauled the table saw off the boat and placed it under the hull, covered with a tarp. Shannon had just spent five  hours giving the below deck areas a thorough cleaning, and along with the left over building material and the lumber I just threw off the boat, we had a very full load for my service truck. Throughout the build Ive always had this fear of not having some piece of building material, so I sort of hoard left over material, and today was the day we realized 90% of it had to go. 

I actually have decided to some time soon make a list of things I need to complete in order to launch. Lots of little things have been getting completed along with some big ticket items. I can officially say my bilge pumps are wired, and I have the picture to prove it. I guess I should clarify this a little and admit that two of the three pumps are wired. The engine room bilge pump along with the pump in the cabin area are complete. The pump in the lazzarette is not wired because its not purchased. The two pumps I have wired are big pumps being Rule 3500s. I had to wire these off the the battery switch panel as these breakers are always hot even if the house bank is turned off. I did have to install 25 amp breakers for each one of these pumps. Using #10 wire, I wired these two pumps to the wheel house so I could see when and if they come on. A pump control  panel seemed to  make sense and the Sea Dog panel appears to be what I was looking for. The panel has a manual and auto mode along with having an audible and visual alarm. If the switch is inadvertently left in the off position, and water rises up to the alarm float, the alarm float along with alarming, will turn the pump on.

We have a few intake and exhaust pipes I had to deal with in regard to insect screens. Using a slice of PVC schedule 40 and cross cutting the slice creates an internal clip that works great holding screen in. Youll have to fool around with how much to remove from the slice,but when youre finished, it gives a nice clean look thats easy to get in and out, holds the screen great, and doesnt corrode.

Because the finished flooring is now complete, we were able to move in the reclining love seat. Ive been on too many boats that did not have at least one comfortable seat, and I for sure did not want our boat to be one of those. The recliner sort of buries the book case, but you can still get to the shelves, and thats a small price to pay for a super comfy place to sit.


The counter top fabricators finished the granite tops, and theres not a bad thing I can say about this. Because we have so much wood in the salon, we decided to do away with the wood top on the book case, and use granite. This little detail changes the way this area looks, and is a much appreciated improvement. The guy who made the templates for the fabricator knew what he was doing, and the tops fit like a glove. The installers did a top notch job and we couldnt be more happy. Before we started the install, I had told the template maker we had to glue the tops to the cabinets. True to that conversation, the installers showed up with the adhesive needed to do the work.

We decided to go with an under mount sink, and Im glad we did for the one reason of being able to fabricate a cutting board that will fit exactly in the sink.

As Ive said before, in order to do this boat launch thing the right way, more time is needed on my part to make this launch happen. I keep going back to needing about another year. If we put off the launch to much longer, were at the end of the summer, and at that point we should just keep her at Washington and finish her up righteous over the Winter. It sure would be nice to have her in the water being 100% complete with nothing left to do... I mean its only time, right?

Phil has sent me construction photos a couple of times in the past few months. Hes done an amazing job of the build and has completed it in just 12 months. Hes not a newcomer to building Wharram cats, however, having built a Tiki 21 in 1984 and then a Tiki 31 in 1990. He says he never really got on with the Tiki 31 and eventually sold her, owning a few monohulls before missing Tikis again and picking up another secondhand Tiki 21.

Phil told me he always wanted a Tiki 26, seeing it as the ideal size and tried to find a used one to buy but with no luck, went ahead and built it from scratch. Judging by these photos, I think he made the right decision. This is inspiration to me, as I slog on through the endless epoxy fillets in the interior of my second hull and look forward to better boatbuilding weather.

I really like the paint job on this one too - it reminds me of the first Wharram I built - my Hitia 17, Segundo Vez which I painted with the same color scheme. He named his new boat Scooby, obviously after the cartoon character as seen on the graphic below. Im looking forward to seeing Scooby launched, and hopefully receiving more photos once Phil is sailing.

This morning, the fog lifted, leaving the island in front of us covered with low lying clouds. The sun came up and after a brief breakfast of muesli and toast with Marmite (gaining us many points with the Brits on-board, who had never met Americans who liked this tasty spread), we took off for the island. Rendezvous at 3 pm, or should I say 15:00 hours, for the next leg of our sail sail.

We briefly visited the islands small village, bought sandwiches and wine for a picnic, sent some postcards to parents and kids, and set off for a long walk.

The Islands landscape is classic barren sea-scape: the  ground covered with ferns that are constantly rustled by a breeze, the houses all with the same architecture, all of them made of concrete with two chimneys, one on each side of the house. The gardens, most of them tended, are in full bloom, especially hydrangeas.

Our destination was one of the several lighthouses on the island. We walked about 5 miles and after reaching the lighthouse, we took pictures, and toured the shop of a local craftsman, then started looking for a good picnic spot.

John decided we should take the grassy trail that followed the coastline and its cliffs. Wonderful views of the water and shore. We soon found the perfect spot.

The grass on the trail was mowed and the trail looked more like a park path that is constantly being kept up. Grass bordering the trail was very soft and plump. John called it "springy turf": you feel like you are walking on springs. Very cool.

While walking back, we saw the town was closed and all the residents were home in their backyards having lunch al fresco. Such nice traditions.

At 15 hours, the Blue Peter was flying, and Luke was ready to pick us up for our next destination, Isle de Molene, a 2 hour sail.

Back on Agnes we sailed past the famous light house that is in every stormy picture in the world. Voila!!

The ride to Molene was quick and quiet. We arrived at the island of Molene just before sunset, at about 8:30pm. Knowing that we had at least another hour and a half of sunshine, we organized a little trip to the shore.
