Design 2336 48 Canal Boat
Here is a preliminary design for a canal cruiser with 48-3" length overall for Irving Johnson, drawn in 1978. Remember, Irving Johnson owned Yankee (design #1278), and is very well documented as having cruised the canals of Europe extensively aboard her. See my posting of August 27, 2010 regarding Yankee by clicking here.
He probably got tired of stepping and unstepping the masts and you obviously cant sail the boat in the canals, so got the motorboat bug. Nothing became of this design beyond what you see here. You can find the principal dimensions on the right side of the plan (double click on the plan itself for zoom). Not a bad looking boat. Overall height as shown on the plan was limited by bridge clearance.

Planking away
Nevertheless, Im glad to say that I am making some progress.
Ive got most of the third row of planking on.
Ive fitted the anchor well floor, the front seat, and started fitting the rear side seats. Its a good idea to cut these to size before installing the third row of planking. Its much easier to fit them in place over sized and scribe the outer hull position using a batten then to try and fit them later.
I have learned two valuable lessons this time around:
Lesson #1. Carefully inspect your plywood, no matter how good its supposed to be. After installing part of my starboard plank, I noticed that something looked odd at one of the edges. Closer inspection revealed this:
.
Yikes! About a half inch of the edge of this sheet of plywood didnt get bonded properly. Im using Aquatek BS-6566 marine plywood and Ive built two boats using this stuff, and this is the first time Ive run across a flaw like this. I had to trim a half inch from the forward edge of one of my planks, which was already installed, to get rid of the bad edge. Im inspecting every piece from now on.
Lesson#2: When installing the planks, its easy to clamp them along the top edge, but the bottom edge has to be fastened with screws, which are removed after the epoxy cures. This leaves a line of ugly screw holes that has to be plugged and sanded. I started doing it this way but then I found a better way. Now I use my PowerShot staple & nail gun loaded with 1/2" nails.
This stapler has just enough power to drive these tiny little nails most of the way through a 1/4" sheet of plywood and into the underlying stringer. To install the plank, I goop the stringers up with "peanut butter", clamp the plank in place along the top, then press firmly along the bottom and drive in a nail every few inches or so.
The little nails are easily pulled later on with a pair of pliers, leaving just a little pinhole. The only downside is that the stapler has a tendency to jam but it still beats using screws by a long shot IMHO.

The Practicality of the Philippine Banca
Beautiful curves on the sheer and outrigger booms on this Philippine banca. The booms are carefully chosen for their curves from the branches of a native thorn tree. Each side of each boom is a single branch, lashed together where they overlap amidships. (Copied from the Facebook page of Tropical Boats, a cultural tourism company.) |
I can assure you that bangcas are alive and well. If you show any narrow boat to a filipino fisherman he will immediately suggest that you add outriggers and bamboo amas. First and foremost most bangcas are rafts for working t sea and so stability is king. But fast access from the shore to the workplace off shore is essential as well. So the narrow hulls, easily driven by very inexpensive single cylinder pump motors. I have tried and tried but it is damn difficult to design a boat that is a better match to the requirements of the typical Filipino than the bangca.
Flat bottom bangcas built of plywood are emerging. Planing boats, very fast on and off shore. Many variations but all have the classical bangca outrigger setup with bamboo amas.

Chinese Bamboo Rafts Redux
Model of a Taiwanese bamboo raft. These were up to 35 feet LOA by 10 feet beam. Photo from Greenhill. (Click any photo to enlarge.) |
The model of the Taiwan raft shows an ocean fishing vessel. But long before the Chinese went to sea, they were doubtless using bamboo rafts for everyday transport on inland waters.
The advantages of bamboo for raft building are substantial. With its sealed, hollow segments, it is far more buoyant than solid timber of equal diameter. Put another way, it is far lighter than solid timber for an equal amount of buoyancy. Not only does that make it easier to maneuver in the water, but it also makes it easier to haul out of the water at the end of a voyage, contributing to its longevity. Construction, too, is far easier: cutting down and positioning bamboo culms would be a piece of cake compared to working with logs for a comparably-sized raft.
The chu-pai, or bamboo raft shown above was used, according to Worcester, on the lower and middle Yangtze "wherever a strong and inexpensive craft is required for work in very shallow rapids. These craft are also used as tenders to wood rafts or for ferrying passengers and cargo from place to place." The craft shown is about 30 feet LOA and a little over 5 feet wide at the bow.
In addition to the visible frames, the bow is held together with a slat that passes through slots cut through the bamboo poles. Some longitudinal stiffness is provided by a kind of toe-rail along each side (#3 in the side-view). The raft was propelled by 15-foot oars worked against four tholes (#7), each about 2 feet tall.
A fa-tzu, from Worcester. Click to enlarge. Please forgive the gutter between the pages, which the scan could not avoid. |
The 110-foot LOA fa-tzu shown was made from bamboos very regular in diameter, at about 5 inches. Lengths, however, were unequal, so that joints between pieces were staggered between neighboring "strakes." The slick outer surface of the bamboo is scraped off and the culm is then dried for several weeks to reduce its moisture content and weight. All fastening is done with lashings. Live fire is used to bend the culms for the upturned bow, which is help in position by a bridle (#2 in the illustration) leading to an iron bar (#4). At the stern is a tiny shelter for the crew (#10), just forward of which is a brazier (#11) on which they cooked their meals.
Built for very shallow water, the fa-tzu was designed to flex as it slid over rocks and shoals. When moving upstream, it was man-hauled with ropes, moving at a rate of 5-10 miles per day. Downstream, just three men worked oars against tholes (#7, 8, 9), making the 100 mile trip in 20 hours.

The Goat Island Skiff Project Begins
Michael Storers Goat Island Skiff is a GREAT boat. We decided to build one for ourselves and use the boat as a test for producing high-quality, perfectly fitting kits to sell to amateurs and other professionals with little time on their hands. The goal for these kits is that they produce a hull with perfect lines that have been adjusted by a professional so new boatbuilders can get a fair hull that goes together easily. Every boat needs refinement. With our patterns, a CNC file will be made, and CNC kits will be produced. With Storers thorough manual, a new boatbuilder can build a great boat for themselves and enjoy doing it because things fit and much of the tricky work has been done for them. Time will be saved and boatbuilders can get on the water sooner.
Clint modified the boat by adding a mizzen, making the boat more along the lines of a sail-and-oar boat and more easily singlehanded.
